Lake Windermere

Lake Windermere is located in the south part of the Lake District near Kendal. With its 11 miles it is the biggest one of the lakes and for me the most beautiful one. With Ambleside in the north, Windermere in the middle and Lakeside in the south it offers all kind of water sports, you could imagine.

The main town at Lake Windermere is Windermere.

Coming from the South or North take the M6 and leave the motorway at Junction 37. Drive on the A684 in direction Kendal. Reaching Kendal Turn onto the A591 until Windermere. You are now at the south lakes of the Lake District.

After arriving in Windermere you should decide where and how long you are staying.

Tourist offices are open all the year (except between Christmas and New Year) at:

- Windermere

- Ambleside

- Bowness-on Windermere (only during main season: April - October)

Hotels and Bed & Breakfast accommodations are in every town and village available under them some really nice and of course expensive 4- and 5-star hotels. Nearly every hotel offers weekend specials and reduced accommodation during off-season.

Around Lake Windermere there are a few Youth Hostel (the main ones are in Ambleside and Windermere). Exploring more of the Lakes you will find a lot more Youth Hostel. If you planning to stay in Youth Hostels it would be helpful for you to buy a Youth Hostel guide.

If you planning to spend some days doing sport activities then you found the right place. Sailing, surfing, water-skiing, mountain biking, walking, trekking... nearly everything is possible. Just ask at the Tourist Information for more information.
