Lake District

At the day when I was leaving the beautiful Lake District, I was taken a special route. This route was recommended to me at the Ambleside Tourist Office (Tel. 015394-32582). I want to encourage you to take at route as well.

Be careful at Autumn and Winter, because the street goes over a high mountain and the weather conditions during the cold period may makes it impossible to drive there. If it is raining or foggy, then I would not taker that route, because to can't see anything in the mountains.

If the weather is sunny or mild, then you will never forget that route.

Starting in Ambleside take the A591 to Windermere at the main roundabout change onto the A592 (small, steep road on your left). You are passing the Nation Trust property Townend, which is worth to visit.

You are now going upper the hills the view like following:

While driving up the mountains take some stops to enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Reaching the plateau of the mountain you will find a nice pub. Sorry but I don't remember its name. It was something with Brother's Inn or so. Here you can stop, taking out the shoes and have a little walk around the hills. There are a few numbered and signed ways. After that, you may want to join the pub for a drink and maybe something to eat.

Driving further on the A592 you will come down to Patterdale. A very small village with just 6 or 7 houses. Take a look around to discover views like this here:

After 1 mile you can see Glenridding a very nice village with Hotels, Bed&Breakfast and as well a Youth Hostel.

Glenridding is located at the south point of Lake Ullswater, which you can do also some water sports.

3 miles behind Glenridding, after the junction of the A592 with the A5091 you will find on your left a sign "Aira Force Waterfall". Stop here and walk up the waterfall. It is worth seeing it:

Coming back to your car, drive further on the A592 passing Watermillock and heading up to the A66 for Penrith. Alternatively you can drive, after seeing the Waterfall, on the A5091 until you are heading the A66 and turn left onto it and drive to Keswick and the surrounding area.

Have a nice trip
